Unpacking My Produce Box!

For two years now, I have been getting a produce box from Abundant Harvest Organics every two or three weeks. I don’t know if it’s technically a CSA because it contains produce from many farms, but it’s a similar idea at least. And I LOVE IT!! It is probably the best thing I’ve done as an adult. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but thanks to this box, I eat healthier, cook more, am more adventurous with my cooking, and have more delicious food. It also keeps me from going to the grocery store as much, which I think is a win all around.

I’d love to show you all what comes in my box and how I use it. I’ll be honest, it’s usually a challenge to eat everything before it goes bad, so I hope that this will encourage me to use everything up.

I got my box last Tuesday and opened it up. Here was the first peek:


Lots of greens! Here’s what I got up close:


Lettuce! This was no surprise, as I get lettuce almost every week. Definitely good to have on hand for salads and sandwiches.


Chard! I like chard a lot, but I haven’t cooked that many things with it. I usually just saute them or add them to eggs.


Curly parsley! Not sure what to do with this, but it sure is pretty.


Now for the second level! Lots of goodies down here 🙂


Spring onions! Spring onions are regular onions, just picked a bit early before they become grownups. I’ve gotten them for the last three boxes, and each week they get a little bigger. These are the biggest yet!


Turnips! I’ll probably need to turn on my oven for these, which I am not excited about since it is super hot in LA right now. My apartment is about 90 degrees, it doesn’t need a 400+ degree oven to add to the mix. But hopefully it will cool off soon, and then I’ll figure out something to do with them.


Fennel! This is one veggie that I’m not too sure about. I haven’t had the bulb raw that many times, so I’m not sure if I’ll like it or how it will go.


Cactus! Or nopales, as it’s officially called. This was definitely a surprise! I’ve had cactus soup at a restaurant before, and that’s the extent of my experience with it. I only got this one leaf, so I don’t have to figure out much with it. I looked up some stuff about it, and many recipes warn about slimy goo that gets released when it’s cooked. Hmm.


Back to familiar territory! Here is the cutest and most perfect tomato ever. I bet it will be fantastic.


Apriums! Apriums are a cross between apricots and plums, but lean toward the apricot side more. A few years ago I made some aprium jam, which was super awesome. I won’t make jam this time (hello 90 degree weather) but I’m looking forward to snacking on these all week.


Potatoes! Okay, I know potatoes don’t sound exciting, but potatoes from Abundant Harvest are the best potatoes ever. They smell so good and have so much flavor, you’ll never go back to boring, bland potatoes again.


And last but not least, strawberries! I’m not gonna lie, I munched on a few of these while photographing everything. Or more than a few. But in my defense, they were VERY ripe, so I needed to eat them fast.
